Kawase-cho Nagaya: Tradition and Renewal (Kyoto, 2026)

Under the supervision of Alex Kerr, our company undertook the renovation and modernization of this early Showa-era row house. Our aim was to preserve the building’s original character while adapting it into a comfortable home for modern life.

Renovating a traditional Kyoto townhouse involves navigating the challenges of limited space. To ensure the house meets contemporary standards, the plumbing, electrical wiring, and insulation were completely replaced. We also installed double-glazed windows and restored the traditional tsuchikabe (earthen walls) to improve the home's overall efficiency—to name just a few examples of the improvements we made.

The project focused on creating a practical and safe environment for a family with small children. By designing a more efficient layout, we created a functional space that honors its history while providing the comfort and utility required by a new generation.
